The probability of receding gums or gingival recession is known to increase with age. Some controllable causes for poor gum health are not flossing and brushing regularly, brushing too hard, grinding teeth, and smoking.

Gum diseases can be prevented as well as cured with the proper treatment. The need for dental procedures arises when non-surgical treatment is ineffective. Here is some information on cosmetic procedures that dentists use for treatment.

Scaling and root planing

Teeth and hard to reach places of the mouth are scraped with a sharp tool to remove tartar and plaque. Deep cleaning is performed to remove bacteria and promote growth of the gum tissue over the teeth.

Some layers of the tooth sustain damage from gum diseases. During root planing, the cementum – calcium film on the root, is removed. Cleaning up the root helps the gum reattach to the tooth and promotes healthy growth of gum tissue.

Open flap procedure

This is needed when the damage from gum disease has reached the bones that support the teeth. Incisions are made on the gum flaps to pull them back. The dentist cleans the plaque and tartar around the roots, in case of bane damage – grafting may be done. Afterwards, the dentist sews the gum flap back.

This process may increase tooth sensitivity and introduce bacteria into the blood stream. It has the same risks as any other invasive procedure may have.

Surgical lip repositioning

This procedure restricts the muscle pull of the elevator lip muscles thereby reducing the gingival display while smiling.

This procedure limits movement of the upper lip. A strip of tissue is removed from where the upper lip connects with the gums. This tissue strip is re-attached at a lower position so that gums are not as exposed when the patient fully smiles.

Laser Gum Reshaping

Gums recede when the tissue starts thinning, and the teeth look more prominent. Laser is used to remove plaque and tartar around the base and gumline. Teeth are smoothed out with an orthodontic tool because rough surfaces are more prone to bacterial infection. Smooth surfaces make it easier for the gums to attach themselves and grow properly.

Laser gum reshaping is one of the least invasive treatment options. The use of laser cauterizes gum tissues which decontaminates the area and lowers the risk of bacterial infection. This also removes the need for stitches which shortens the recovery time.

Some indicators of poor gum health are loose teeth, pain in gums, tooth sensitivity, bleeding while brushing or flossing, and swollen or shrinking gums. It’s advised to visit the nearest dental clinic.
