Wisdom Tooth Removal-What to Eat and What to Avoid

Written by Nancy

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located in the back of your mouth. They usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 25.

The thing about wisdom teeth is that they often come out at a wrong angle. This causes a great deal of pain because of which people usually get them removed.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

You will have to undergo surgery in order to remove a wisdom tooth. You’re sedated throughout the process. In case the teeth haven’t appeared yet, the doctors will make incisions in order to remove them.

They might even remove the bone if it’s preventing accessing to the teeth. After the surgery, you’ll be required to avoid certain food items. Let’s take a look at some of these:

Food Items You Should Avoid

Make sure you avoid eating harder food immediately after the surgery.  These include cookies, popcorn, and nuts. The problem with these is that they get lodged in the extraction site and form clots which can turn into infections.

In addition to that, also make sure you avoid spicy or acidic food. Spices result in stinging of the removal site and lead to pain and discomfort.

Chewy and sticky food items (gum and candy) which require you to open your mouth wide should also be avoided.

After surgery, your muscles are still weak and they require some time to recover. Therefore, make sure you do not overdrive them. You don’t want to put too much pressure on them.

On a related note, avoid using straws. When you suck using straws, you end up removing clots that may be helping your mouth heal.

Food Items You Can Eat

After getting surgery, it’s best you stick to a liquid diet for some time. Start with eating soft food items like yogurt, apple sauce, mashed potatoes and jell-O.

Since you do not have to chew any of these, you don’t feel any pain. In fact, ice cream and jell-O might actually relieve pain. Soup provides you with all the nutrients that you need.

After some time has passed, you can start moving back to normal diet. Start with semi solid food like eggs and oatmeal before you move on to vegetables, fruits, and chicken.
